by | Nov 6, 2020 | Meditation Hypnosis

can you quit smoking with hypnosis

Have you been looking for online hypnosis to quit smoking method?  Whether that’s through mp3s or seeing a certified hypnotherapist.  Let’s delve deeper into this technique and see the studies conducted on smoking cessation.  You can then decide if this tool could be a viable solution to help you quit smoking.

With cigarette smoking, current smokers say it usually gets you down, even though at the time it feels like you’ve satisfied the need. Your hair smells, your clothes smell, the house smells of cigarette smoke.

Added to all of this, you know that you will have to quit or let it slowly kill you through time as we’re all aware of the dangers of smoking.

At some point, you are going to have to go through nicotine withdrawal symptoms, as those adverse effects from smoking can negatively impact every aspect of your life.

Ask any ex-smoker, and they will tell you how challenging it can be to have some mind control when it comes to stopping smoking.

Quitting smoking is a difficult decision and is one of the hardest things you will ever do in your life. But so are the dangers of smoking regularly in the long term.

Regularly reminding yourself of the dangers of smoking is essential.  When you remind yourself daily of your smoking status, you’re programming your mind to do something about this unhealthy behavior.  Sometimes your mind needs a little time to adapt and find the right strategy.

We all know the serious effects of smoking and how important it is to quit while we’re healthy enough to make a choice. So let’s not rehash old ground, right?

Instead, let’s discuss a talked-about cessation method that could help you quit smoking faster and possibly with fewer withdrawal symptoms.  For example, automatically reaching out for a cigarette without even thinking.

Is Hypnosis an effective tool for quitting smoking?

To discover the truth of the hypnosis and smoking cessation debate, we looked at what  science had to say.

If we browse through the science sections of Google Scholar, we find a dozen articles to choose from.

We approve of this Randomized Trial from as long ago as 2008. It gives details of the stages of quitting smoking, as well as the initial success rate.

First, 286 smokers were placed in a randomized, controlled test group.

Some of the participants were given no help to quit, some were given behavioral counseling, and some were given hypnosis sessions.

At first, 29% of the hypnosis group kept to their goals, versus 23% of the behavioral group.

After 6 months, 26% of hypnosis patients were still off cigarettes, compared to 18% of the other.

Over twelve months, this figure became 20% versus 14%.

Although not the only study, we think this sums up what all the other studies say (you can find them here.)

Hypnosis Vs Hypnotherapy

A quick note on these two, to dispel the confusion.

Hypnotherapy and hypnosis are almost the same thing.

While hypnosis is the act of being in the trance state and you can practice this in the comfort of your own home. Hypnotherapy is more in a clinical setting with an actual hypnotherapist.

So, when you have hypnosis sessions to help you quit smoking, you are getting hypnotherapy, since it will ultimately benefit your health.

Hypnotherapy can help with other health focused problems, too, such as insomnia, pain management, and weight gain/loss and other health concerns.

How a Quitting Smoking with Hypnosis Works

When you want to quit cigarette smoking, you will either go for a clinical session for hypnotherapy or use hypnosis audios or tapes in the comfort of your own home such as this one:

If you are going for a hypnotherapy session, your hypnotherapist will introduce themselves and put you at ease with a chat, usually asking a few questions to see are there any other issues that could have led to smoking behaviors in the first place and to let you know the amount of sessions you may need.

It’s also a time when the hypnotherapist discovers the style of positive suggestions that are needed in your script tailored to motivate you.

The great thing with hypnotherapy is that your subconscious mind will do most of the work for you in relation to your behaviors to smoking, whilst doing self repair and healing toward a healthier mind and body synergy.

In a clinical session,  they will invite you to relax and put your feet up or sometimes seated in a comfortable position, depending on the client’s preferences.

Once you are in a relaxed position that you can hold for the duration of an hour session or longer, they start to guide you through your hypnotherapy for smoking session.

This effective practice normally begins with them having you focus on each part of your body (or some other form of induction to make you totally relaxed) enough to bypass the over analytical and resisting part of the thinking mind and program positive suggestions to the subconscious mind, in order to release some of those smoking behaviors so you can move toward becoming smoke free.

As many of us already know that our critical part of the mind, also blocks us from our own success at times, especially if we are trying something new in our lives. Of course, in saying this, our critical and analytical mind also plays an important role in our life.

If you are listening at home to your hypnosis audio,  you might even be drifting off to sleep because the induction itself will be incredibly relaxing.

Many hypnotherapists say it is fine to drift off to sleep with the hypnosis audios, but in order to make it fully effective, select some times during the week where you are in a seated position and more alert as you are working on various parts of the brain.

You can also mix it up a bit so your brain doesn’t get bored listening to the same thing over and over, so some awake and asleep routines is a good mix when listening to the audios.

Does Hypnosis work for smoking?

According to Healthline, research from 2019 shows those that 20-35% of people that used self-hypnosis to quit smoking were still off the cigarettes, six months later.

Of course, this isn’t an overwhelming percentage, but if you try a few options together, example-take smoking cessation counseling, use the patches, chew the gum, and do the hypnosis sessions, you are far more likely to quit long term than those who go it alone, as all of these are supportive mechanisms which can go hand in hand with one another.

This tells us that quitting smoking fast isn’t about what we do, it’s about the number of tools we use in combination with one another to speed up the process and make it a smoother transitioning phase for us.

The more tools we have, the better we can manage.

How many hours of hypnosis does it take to stop smoking?

In general, approx four sessions of hypnotherapy are enough to show progress, others say they gave it up after a one hour single session?

This really depends on the individual and their motivations for smoking cessation as well as the underlying issues.

Generally speaking approx four weekly sessions are about three hours or longer depending on the duration of each session. Depending on the client, the individual hypnosis sessions could be weekly depending on how effective the treatment is for each person.

However, if you want to stay away from nicotine addiction of cigarettes, using self-hypnosis audios are a healthy alternative smoking cessation to deter you from the idea of smoking and remove the motivations for smoking, without any unpleasant outcomes or side effects from medications with behavioral therapy.

With benefits of hypnosis audios, a person can continue this in the comfort of their own home, as its also a supportive tool in becoming smoke free.

Here is a hypnosis audio that has been known to help with the smoking cessation:

During your quit smoking journey, you can also listen to soothing music to relax the jittery mind, and watch TV or films, that calm you down while you are  removing the ideas of smoking.

Avoid over-stimulation for that first few weeks as you can lessen the triggers that caused you to smoke, to begin with.

You can also visit a hypnotherapist if you need to keep control of your weight while you go through the smoking cessation process.

Hypnosis: for quit smoking faster (use multiple tools)

A rose quartz crystal can be used as a lovely every day jewelry piece.  It is most popularly seen as a necklace pendant, pink diamond-shaped earring or bracelet stone.   However, its most common healing and spiritual use as jewelry is in the form of a necklace.  As a necklace, the rose quartz is closest to your Heart and gain the most energetic impact there as a healing crystal.

For spiritual, self love and healing purposes, a rose quartz crystal can be worn anywhere on your body’s exterior.   However, users should be warned that it should not be worn internally, inhaled or ingested.  Composed of silicon, rose quartz is considered to be toxic in these specific scenarios.

Many prefer to use it  in their healing practices as a solitary rose quartz stone or wear some mala beads.

So, the question people think about – hypnotherapy versus drug?  We are glad to say that there are various behavioral treatments which include healthier options when it comes to quit smoking, hypnotherapy or hypnosis audios are a great supportive aid in this journey for you.

Some people use them as their stand alone tool kit toward quitting smoking and are  successful, while others try a few options together to get through this time of quit smoking faster and easier.

There is current evidence from study sites that hypnosis is an effective treatment which works.

To be more specific, roughly a quarter of us will find it easier to quit smoking – and to stay away from the nicotine addiction for good – if we go for smoking cessation using clinical hypnosis or using the aid of hypnosis audios on a daily basis.

Many find that the audios are a great way to start as well as keeping us on track, as it’s a really cost effective toolkit to use as well as being able to use this within the comfort of your own home anytime.

And even though you’ve been to a hypnotherapist for smoking cessation he/she may still give you some audios as an aid during your journey to quit smoking, as it helps to stabilize and strengthen the positive new suggestions.

If you are serious about quitting, those are the odds you can’t afford to miss out on, as hypnosis is one of those complementary therapies that can be used with another smoking cessation program or on its own.
